Devotion: Fear of the Lord

To fear the Lord is to tremble at the thought of offending him by unbelief and disobedience. It is the feeling that God is not to be trifled with... Those who fear God shudder at the thought of speaking that way about their Majestic Father. Anything that dishonors God is anathema to those who fear God. -- John Piper

Heart Prep: Read Psalm 19:7-9

  • How can God’s perfect law revive your soul today?

  • How can your testimony lead to wisdom?

  • How can the precepts of God’s Word lead to rejoicing?

  • How can God’s commandments lead to enlightenment?

What does it mean to say the “fear of the Lord is clean”?

  • Fear / Yara:  The reverence that is OWED to God as the only Divine Being.  Fear of the Lord is directly associated with His Holiness and Divinity.

  • Clean / Tehora:  To be clean and bright as the heavens. All defilement is purged.

Deep Dive:  Read 1 Peter 1: 14-15

  • You are commanded to “be holy”.  What is the reason given?

  • What does this have to do with the fear of God?

  • Does your relationship with God reflect the sentiments of love for His law and precepts, and is it marked with deep reverence for His holiness?  How so?

If you think you can walk in holiness without keeping up perpetual fellowship with Christ, you have made a great mistake. If you would be holy, you must live close to Jesus. -- Charles Spurgeon

Application: Read 2 Timothy 2:21

  • Are you willing to be a vessel of honorable use?

  • Take some time with God in prayer this morning.
