Update from Caleb Sylvester Regarding the Emergency DC-3 Relief Flight

Arthur's Town Cat Island, September 1, 2011 - - As I ride back in the DC3 from Cat Island I want to get my thoughts down.  Not because I will forget, but because I saw so much in such a little amount of time and I need to get it down on paper to process it all.  Never in my life have I witnessed such a resilient people as Cat Island natives.  They went from having Reliefvery little to having almost nothing.  Everyone had a smile on their face as we greeted each other as old friends.  Each one greeting me with the same four words “thank God for life!”  The pictures tell part of the story, but nothing can make the smells, the scenes of devastation and the clouds of mosquitos come to life.  As I write this I am still scraping dead mosquitos off myself.

Unable to bathe, no electricity, almost no food or water, what is left of their belongings spread around the yard to dry in the sun; and everyone can only wonder when a boat with supplies with arrive. This describes life on Cat Island at this moment.  Worst of all the already crippled economy is now at a dead standstill.  Even if supplies arrive on the boats there is no money to purchase them.  Dear friends looked in my eyes and told me with much pain that they have no money and no work.

Their belongings are gone but they “thank God for life.”

If you were a Cat Islander at this moment, you would not be able to go to the local store and buy supplies because there are none.  When supplies finally arrive you would still be unable to purchase them because you have no money.  Your only chance at food or building materials would be to convince the store owner to let you open a line of credit.

Damage is every where. I have never seen so many downed power polls with wires across the road as I have seen today.  I was told that power in the South will take up to a month to restore.  I think this is optimistic.  On the whole island there is only a small crew of guys working poll by poll, hoping help will arrive.

The supplies we dropped totaled almost 5,000 lbs.  Those items will be distributed and used within a day or two.  It barely makes even a small dent, but the peace and encouragement it brought is far reaching.  As I spoke with each person they requested the same things: prayer, food, water, building supplies.

I came away and with an intense burden to do more, feeling like there is a mountain that needs pushed.  We serve a God whom mountains bow and worship.  A God capable of redeeming mankind, a God who loves the hurting people of Cat Island.  It brings Him much glory when we would seek to make him known by caring for the suffering.

What are you willing to sacrifice? Would you skip a dinner out?  Could you go without cable TV for a month?  Would you consider holding off on that new pair of shoes or the latest gadget?

PLEASE DONATE NOW

Hi Virginia - Thanks for the support! The best help right now is making an online donation. Soon we plan to organize volunteer trips as well. We appreciate your support, and we know our friends on Cat Island do as well.

Oh my, thank you for a great and timely nacourngemeet once again brother! The Lord is teaching me to suffer the chidren , that we will be persecuted by the carnal nature in anyone we share truth with. Even my cat is showing this forth with her kittens which are at an age now where they are fighting her efforts to groom them and she has to get more aggressive to catch them and hold them down so she can give them their bath' while suffering their biting and scratching, lol! I am just now in a back-and-forth conversation with another minstry that I had been following for a time, but am now growing up' to discern the error there. So the time has arrived to do battle, not that I even went looking for it, but it has come to me. The women should keep silent card has been pulled in selfish defence, but how can I keep silent when it's my own soul involved. Thank God for His discernment! It's so deceptive when there is truth, even wilderness truth, but because of not enduring to the end of carnality and of following signs too much instead of the Holy Spirit, it is mixed with a wrong spirit. Bless you bro!
